Install Memory Vault in Codex

What you need first

  • Codex, installed.
  • Docker, which gives the docker command the server starts with.
  • Your own values for YOUR_DB_HOST,YOUR_DB_PORT,YOUR_DB_NAME,YOUR_DB_USER,YOUR_DB_PASSWORD.

Steps

  1. Run this in a terminal. It writes the server into ~/.codex/config.toml, which the Codex CLI, its IDE extension and the ChatGPT desktop app share.
codex mcp add memory-vault --env DB_HOST=YOUR_DB_HOST --env DB_PORT=YOUR_DB_PORT --env DB_NAME=YOUR_DB_NAME --env DB_USER=YOUR_DB_USER --env DB_PASSWORD=YOUR_DB_PASSWORD -- docker run -i --rm -e DB_HOST -e DB_PORT -e DB_NAME -e DB_USER -e DB_PASSWORD ghcr.io/mihaibuilds/memory-vault-mcp:1.6.1
  1. Replace YOUR_DB_HOST,YOUR_DB_PORT,YOUR_DB_NAME,YOUR_DB_USER,YOUR_DB_PASSWORD with your own values.
  2. Start Codex again and type /mcp: the server is listed.

Check it worked

Ask Codex: List the tools of memory-vault.

If it does not start

Cannot connect to the Docker daemon
Docker is not running. Start it, then restart Codex.
The server starts, but its tools fail
A YOUR_… placeholder is still in the config, or its value is wrong.
