Install WordPress MCP Server in mcp-client-cli

What you need first

  • mcp-client-cli, installed.
  • Node.js, which gives the npx command the server starts with.
  • Your own values for YOUR_LOCAL_USERNAME,YOUR_WP_DB_HOST,YOUR_WP_DB_NAME,YOUR_WP_DB_USER,YOUR_WP_DB_PASSWORD.

Steps

  1. Open ~/.codex/config.toml, or create it. The Codex CLI, its IDE extension and the ChatGPT desktop app share this file.
  2. Add this table at the end of the file.
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "wp-mcp": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@rnaga/[email protected]", "local", "start"],
      "env": { "LOCAL_USERNAME": "YOUR_LOCAL_USERNAME", "WP_DB_HOST": "YOUR_WP_DB_HOST", "WP_DB_NAME": "YOUR_WP_DB_NAME", "WP_DB_USER": "YOUR_WP_DB_USER", "WP_DB_PASSWORD": "YOUR_WP_DB_PASSWORD" }
    }
  }
}
  1. Replace YOUR_LOCAL_USERNAME,YOUR_WP_DB_HOST,YOUR_WP_DB_NAME,YOUR_WP_DB_USER,YOUR_WP_DB_PASSWORD with your own values.
  2. Save the file and restart mcp-client-cli.

Check it worked

Ask mcp-client-cli: List the tools of wp-mcp.

If it does not start

spawn npx ENOENT
Node.js is not on the PATH that mcp-client-cli sees. Install it, or write the full path of npx in the config.
The server starts, but its tools fail
A YOUR_… placeholder is still in the config, or its value is wrong.
Nothing changes after a restart
The file is not valid JSON any more. Look for a missing comma where the block was added.
