Install grad-agent in mcp-client-cli

What you need first

  • mcp-client-cli, installed.
  • uv, which gives the uvx command the server starts with.
  • Your own values for YOUR_ANTHROPIC_API_KEY,YOUR_SMTP_SERVER,YOUR_SMTP_PORT,YOUR_SMTP_USERNAME,YOUR_SMTP_PASSWORD,YOUR_SMTP_FROM.

Steps

  1. Open ~/.codex/config.toml, or create it. The Codex CLI, its IDE extension and the ChatGPT desktop app share this file.
  2. Add this table at the end of the file.
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "grad-agent": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": ["grad-agent==0.2.9"],
      "env": { "ANTHROPIC_API_KEY": "YOUR_ANTHROPIC_API_KEY", "SMTP_SERVER": "YOUR_SMTP_SERVER", "SMTP_PORT": "YOUR_SMTP_PORT", "SMTP_USERNAME": "YOUR_SMTP_USERNAME", "SMTP_PASSWORD": "YOUR_SMTP_PASSWORD", "SMTP_FROM": "YOUR_SMTP_FROM" }
    }
  }
}
  1. Replace YOUR_ANTHROPIC_API_KEY,YOUR_SMTP_SERVER,YOUR_SMTP_PORT,YOUR_SMTP_USERNAME,YOUR_SMTP_PASSWORD,YOUR_SMTP_FROM with your own values.
  2. Save the file and restart mcp-client-cli.

Check it worked

Ask mcp-client-cli: List the tools of grad-agent.

If it does not start

spawn uvx ENOENT
uv is not on the PATH that mcp-client-cli sees. Install it, or write the full path of uvx in the config.
The server starts, but its tools fail
A YOUR_… placeholder is still in the config, or its value is wrong.
Nothing changes after a restart
The file is not valid JSON any more. Look for a missing comma where the block was added.
