Install Google Tasks MCP Server in mcp-client-cli

What you need first

  • mcp-client-cli, installed.
  • uv, which gives the uvx command the server starts with.
  • Your own values for YOUR_GOOGLE_CLIENT_ID,YOUR_GOOGLE_CLIENT_SECRET,YOUR_GOOGLE_REDIRECT_URI.

Steps

  1. Open ~/.codex/config.toml, or create it. The Codex CLI, its IDE extension and the ChatGPT desktop app share this file.
  2. Add this table at the end of the file.
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "google-tasks-mcp": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": ["google-tasks-mcp==0.4.0"],
      "env": { "GOOGLE_CLIENT_ID": "YOUR_GOOGLE_CLIENT_ID", "GOOGLE_CLIENT_SECRET": "YOUR_GOOGLE_CLIENT_SECRET", "GOOGLE_REDIRECT_URI": "YOUR_GOOGLE_REDIRECT_URI" }
    }
  }
}
  1. Replace YOUR_GOOGLE_CLIENT_ID,YOUR_GOOGLE_CLIENT_SECRET,YOUR_GOOGLE_REDIRECT_URI with your own values.
  2. Save the file and restart mcp-client-cli.

Check it worked

Ask mcp-client-cli: List the tools of google-tasks-mcp.

If it does not start

spawn uvx ENOENT
uv is not on the PATH that mcp-client-cli sees. Install it, or write the full path of uvx in the config.
The server starts, but its tools fail
A YOUR_… placeholder is still in the config, or its value is wrong.
Nothing changes after a restart
The file is not valid JSON any more. Look for a missing comma where the block was added.
